A Challenging Blockage in Gosforth

Alison’s Nasty Smell

Alison, a homeowner in the area, reached out to us with a concerning problem – a foul stench emanating from her kitchen. She was uncertain whether it was due to a drain blockage or something more sinister – possibly a deceased animal trapped beneath her floorboards.

Initial Investigation and Complications

Alison had initially attempted to troubleshoot the issue herself by flushing toilet paper through a readily accessible drain in her garage. This initial test showed that the toilet paper passed through without hindrance, indicating no blockages in that particular section of her drainage system.

Unveiling the Challenge

However, the situation became more complicated as two of the drains closest to her kitchen proved inaccessible. These drains were of the old-fashioned, metal-on-metal frame and they were concealed beneath a block-paved manhole. It’s at this point that Alison turned to A1 Drain Clean.

Overcoming Obstacles – Things Get Complicated

With the aid of our hydraulic lifter, we managed to raise the first drain, but the second proved to be a formidable challenge. Extensive manual effort, employing the lifter, a mallet, chisel and even crowbars, was required to eventually lift the second drain cover.

The Breakthrough Solution

It was at this point that the breakthrough came – when we uncovered the source of the issue. (Drumroll) A tangled and compressed mass of pungent tree roots – weighing around 10 pounds – was forming a very efficient organic block in the drainage system, as you can see from the photos below.

At this point removal of the obstruction was actually pretty straightforward not only eliminating the unpleasant odour but also saving Alison a significant sum of money.

By addressing the root cause of the problem (quite literally), we spared Alison the additional expense and disruption of enlisting pest control services and potentially having to remove her floorboards. Because sometimes, it’s not just about unblocking a drain, it’s about providing our clients with peace of mind.
